Project Dignity serving the homeless with dignity, humility & love |
WHAT WE DO
"I saw this lady. She kept coming around and she cool. She helped me. Nobody ever helped with nothin' before in my life........" James, age 19
|
The scope of Project Dignity’s services is broad.
We don't fit into any particular category because we constantly adjust
what we do, based on what difficulties our families face in their daily lives.
We fit our services to their ever changing needs, not the other
way around.
We go to our clients.
We don't make them come to us because we acknowledge that with poverty
often comes a lack of transportation.
Life is enough of a struggle when you are poor and homeless.
We don't offer service our clients are unable to get to.
We want to be a solution, not yet another barrier.
We do everything humanly possible (and oftentimes the impossible) to ease
the frustration and desperation of their lives.
While we don’t feel anyone can ever fully understand the motel situation, we
believe we stand a good chance, since to our knowledge we are the only local
organization who is focusing their services solely on the homeless
population living in residential motels.
·
Providing change and laundry soap to help a mother do her family’s laundry
·
Providing bus passes so a father can get to work or take his sick child to the
doctor
·
Distributing head lice shampoo so a mother can get her child back in school,
·
Educating school districts on laws regarding school access for homeless
children.
·
Providing canes, walkers or toilet seat lifters to senior citizens, so they may
maintain their independence.
·
Delivering emergency food and diapers to a desperate mother
·
Taking a feather bed mattress or camp cot so a child does not have to sleep on
the floor, exposed to cockroaches.
·
Filling prescriptions for families without medical insurance
·
Providing gift certificates so that a parent can get the proper clothing for a
job interview. · Providing money for school books and school uniforms. The list is endless. Fortunately, so is our energy and dedication. No matter how the overall economic condition
improves, there will always be
families in need and we will always be there to help them. In 2007 Project Dignity’s 15 volunteers provided over 2,500 hours of service to nearly 7,000 families, distributed 50,000 pounds of food and clothing, assisted 450 children with school enrollment, distributed 1300 gifts at various events and hundreds of books and other literacy items. |
